The womens center mentions how there are certain celebrities that are now taking a stand against media. The medias infamous haters are Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Simpson went through a phase in her life where she was a little on the heavier side. That being said, all that was posted about her during this time were comments calling her ‘FAT’ and a “COW”. She only became stronger from this and turned the hate into her own television show called ” the price of beauty”. Spears took similar action when she forced Candies the clothing brand to only publish pictures of her that were untouched. Not only does media have major effects on the heavy girl who sits next to you in class or the athlete on steroids but, it can have major effects on celebrities too. That being said, I think its time that society shows media who the real cows are.
Mallery Valianuieva discusses how media is making teenage pregnancy into a trend. She explains that in older times women would get married and then have a baby. She believes that the society today is much different because women are more independent. She feels that shows like Teen Mom are causing pregnancy to become a trend. Although, teen mom might not be the most glamorous show she believes that it would have made money either way. Instead of making out teen pregnancy to be a bad thing she fears it’s only developing it into a trend. I understand where she’s coming from however, I have watched teem mom before and I see no way that it can possibly cause people to want to have a baby however, today’s society is pretty fascinating so at this point I believe that really anything is possible.
On a Jsc Blog the dangers of social media are discussed when it comes to teens. Since Social media is rapid these days it makes it a lot easier for teens to use the web or a phone to sext. Sexting has become popular among teenagers. This is a serious problem because once you click the send button you cant control were you image will end up.This blog discusses that sexting leads to many teen suicides, cyber bullying and pornography charges. The media is much to blame for this. With all these celebrities who became famous from their sex tapes I’m not surprised that teens are sexting. This is a serious issue that unfortunately is going on in today’s society and is being encouraged by the media.
K. Nola Mokeyane in her article discusses the positive and negative influences that the media has on teenagers. She mentions the effects that media can have toward female body issues. Many magazine advertisements tell girls how to look, dress and act ,which can be very detrimental. She also mentions that some movies portray drugs, alcohol, sexual actions and violence as normal. That being said, she fears that these television actions might turn into a reality. She even further mentions that the media can lead to culture and political awareness. I think she is spot on with this point. I can’t even count the number of random facts about culture I know just from watching television. She discusses how the media can lead to positive social skills. She thinks that media sites are a good way to make friends. Many people would agree with her on that point. However, to me all that comes to mind when I think of making friends on the internet is STRANGER DANGER.
The global dispatch posted an article about the television show Degrassi and it’s negative effects on teens. Some of the issues they have with this show is that it involves guns, porn and drinking. They don’t believe that this is an appropriate show for teen nick. I understand were there coming from. However, I don’t fully agree with them. Yes, Degrassi does display some events that aren’t so pretty. However the teen years are not exactly easy sailing. In today’s society teens are faced with many issues and rather than these issues being hidden from them I think shows like Degrassi are doing a good job conveying serious matters and how to learn from them. Anyone who watched Full House knows that at the end up every episode theirs a lesson learned. Many times the same can be said for Degrassi. This show is all about the pretties and uglies of being a teen. And to comment on the whole having this show on Teen Nick is a disgrace thing. I highly disagree the channel is after all called TEEN Nick.
Vanessa Bennington went around interviewing men about their bodies and steroid use. When most people think of body issues they don’t exactly jump to men. Usually people think of women who are struggling with eating disorders. However, Bennington learned from these men that many of them feel insecure about their bodies. This insecurity starts around the age of puberty. Yong men are suffering from anxiety and try to impress the opposite sex. There way of doing this is by bulking up and working out. However, men just like women have insecurities and therefore, may use steroids. A major reason for these insecurities is the media. The media likes to display images of really skinny women and really meaty men. All over magazines, television and the internet you’ll see men being displayed in these ways. The media is a dangerous factor in today’s society. I think that as a girl I never really took into account that men can suffer from major body issues. Although, I can’t make the media disappear I can learn to stop myself from saying “how hot” Ryan Goslings abs look in front of a guy. Just like young women, young men have insecurities which can lead to serious health problems.
Greta Waag from Sherman Connecticut was appalled by urban outfitters latest t-shirt, which was labeled EAT LESS. This shirt is being sold online and in stores. That being said,Greta is forming a petition against the sale of this shirt. It upsets Greta immensely because it implies that girls need to have eating disorders to be beautiful. She thinks that one of the major factors that leads to these type of disorders is media ans society. Not only is this type of society dangerous to the health of young girls ,but its now turning into a way to make money. I believe that eating disorders are a serious issue and should never be used as an excuse to make a profit.Nor, should media be imposing this idea on young girls that having a food disorder is beautiful.I think its time that society changes its view on beauty and just like this shirt I think eating disorders should be ‘so last season”.
